One of the historical landmarks in St. Marys, Ohio is the Old Miami Erie Canal Boat and Memorial Park.
In the heart of uptown’s commercial district, a 3-acre manicured paradise awaits. There is a memorial in this park that commemorates the WWI soldiers who served their country.
In the park you could also see the “Belle of St. Marys” canal boat. The boat was officially dedicated on September 23, 1990. During the dedication day, the “Belle of St. Marys” drew an estimated 2,000 spectators.
The original canal boat deteriorated over time like many others exposed to water, and in 2001, it was removed from the canal. City workers used the original boat’s parts to build a new one and in 2002, the rebuilt ship was lowered into the canal on a concrete cradle.
The “Veteran’s Memorial Walkway” was constructed in the Summer of 1993. There is a walkway that leads to a covered bridge. Along the cement path are 600 red bricks, each inscribed with the name of a local citizen who has served in the military.
