If the word “Mothman” sounds familiar to you, it maybe because there was a popular book by John Keel in 1975 that was about The Mothman Prophecies. Also, the book was made into a Hollywood film in 2002 that starred famous actor Richard Gere.
The Mothman folklore started around 1960s when a mysterious creature was reportedly seen in the Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The sighting was first published by Point Pleasant Register and later the story was picked up by major newspaper in the U.S.
According to the story of the “Legend of the Mothman”, on November 1966, two young couples drove into the TNT area north of Point Pleasant when they realized that they were not alone. The couple told police that they saw a large grey creature whose eyes “glowed red” when the car’s headlights picked it up. They described it as a “large flying man with ten-foot wings”. And the rest was history…
What the couple saw that night has evolved into one of the great mysteries of all time. It has grown into a phenomenon known all over the world by millions of curious people asking questions: “What did the couple see?”, “What really happened?”
Even up to this day, the mystery of the Mothman still remains. A festival in Point Pleasant is held annually to celebrate the Mothman legend.
