The Serpent Mound Historical Site is the largest effigy mound in the world, about 1,400 feet long. An effigy mound is a giant earthen sculpture used as a shrine to honor the powerful spirit it represents. This mound represents the Great Serpent who was the Lord of the World Below — a world beneath the surface of the earth! In the traditions of the American-Indian tribes, the people call upon the Great Serpent for the power to cure illness or be successful in animal hunting.
The head of the Serpent Mound is aligned to the western horizon where the sun sets on the Summer Solstice (the longest day of the year).
The Serpent Mound was built by the American Indians of the Eastern Woodlands. It still remains a mystery as to when exactly the mound was built. Archeologists say this mound was built about 2,300 years ago.
