I never thought that a Wright Brothers National Museum exists, until I visited Carillon Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio. Also called the John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers Aviation Center, it houses the original 1905 Wright Flyer III: the only airplane designated a National Historic Landmark, the world’s first practical airplane, and what the Wrights considered their most important aircraft.

Carillon Park founder, Colonel Deeds, approached his friend, Orville Wright, about displaying a replica of the 1903 Flyer. Orville had a better idea. He suggested restoring the original third plane instead, which is the 1905 Wright Flyer III. It is this 1905 Wright Flyer III that truly taught the brothers how to fly.
