The Kinsey Mound does not show up in search results when you google, for instance, “things to see near Xenia Ohio.” I tried to use the keywords “things to see near Wilberforce Ohio” and still Kinsey Mound was not listed in the results. Not even the keywords “Indian Mounds in Ohio” would work. Only when you specifically search for “Kinsey Mound” that you would be led to the Greene County Parks and Trails website.
The reason for this is that, Kinsey Mound is not really a place a tourist would normally visit or spend hours driving to. It is seldom searched online. Also, the place is so small that you would be done with it in 15 minutes or so. So why bother to visit?
Truth is, Kinsey Mound has its own rare attractive advantage over other mounds as it remains in good condition. It is also one of the many ancient monuments (earth mounds) in Ohio. The most famous one is the Williamson Mound located at the Indian Mound Reserve in Cedarville, Ohio.
The small earthen Kinsey Mound is believed to be a burial mound, built by American Indians of the prehistoric Adena culture, who inhabited the area from about 500 BC to 100 AD.
People of the Adena culture were the first in the Ohio Valley to build mounds and earthworks, the earliest form of sacred architecture in the Midwest.
How to Get There.
I missed the entrance the first time I drove to the location, even with my Google Map app. The location is near a residential community. In fact, there are houses just few meters away from the mound. There is no designated parking lot. However, on-street parking is available. To get there, use these GPS coordinates: N 39 42.578, W 83 54.708.
I tried the physical address, but it brought me two blocks away. But you could still try it:
965 Mound Court
Xenia, Ohio 45385
Fees.
FREE. No one mans the place. Most likely, you would be the only one visiting the mound.
Note.
The mound is located in a 5-acre forested park. Once you are done seeing the mound, you could spend checking the surrounding areas. By the way, there are no facilities available. Use your mouse to scroll through the 360-degree photo below.
