This clock atop the Brethen Tower has been one of Dayton, Ohio’s most well known landmarks since 1919.

Thirty five feet tall with a 15-foot spire, this iconic clock was originally located on the Callahan Building — later known as the Gem City Savings Building — at Third and Main Streets in downtown Dayton. From 1978 until 2006, it was located on the Reynolds and Reynolds Building near the intersection of Interstate 75 and U.S. Route 35.

Interesting historical facts:

1. In 1891, Paul Laurence Dunbar worked as an elevator operator in the Callahan Building for $4 a week. He wrote poetry between calls and later became one of the first internationally famous African American poets.

2. Dayton manufacturer and banker, William P. Callahan, built Dayton’s first skyscraper in 1892 with 9 stories.
