What you see at the Carillon Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio is a representative auto sales building housing early Dayton-made automobiles. Among them are a 1908 Stoddard-Dayton, 1910 Speedwell, and 1910 Courier.

In the early 20th century, there were as many as 14 automobile manufacturers in Dayton. Only a few of them produced autos in any real quantity. The most prominent of the Dayton car manufacturers included the Dayton Motor Car Company and the Speedwell Motor Car Company.

In 1909, a car made by Dayton Motor Car Company won first place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with an average speed of 57.3 mph.

Interesting historical facts:

1. Cordy Ruse, a friend of the Wright Brothers, built Dayton’s first automobile in 1896. Wilbur Wright suggested attaching a sheet under the car to catch the parts that he thought would fall off.
