The Newcom Tavern was built in 1796 and currently located inside the Carillon Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio. Considered the oldest standing building in Dayton, it was built by Robert Edgar for Colonel George Newcom. Edgar was paid 75 cents a day to build the “best house in Dayton”. Newcom provided Edgar room and board. This hand-hewn loghouse originally stood at Main Street and Water Street.
George Newcom and his family were among the first settlers to arrive in Dayton in April 1796.
Interesting historical facts:
1. For 65 cents a night, a traveler could have a meal and lodging for himself and his horse at this tavern.
2. Central to community life, the tavern also served as Dayton’s first jail, church, general store, and Montgomery County’s first court house.
