There is only one place in Texas where you can enjoy over 80 miles of hiking trails and at the same time experience being on top of the world. That place is the Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
Among all the hiking trails, its the Guadalupe Peak Trail that comes out outstanding. Steep, strenuous, challenging, rewarding — are few of the adjectives that describe the place and the experience. You need to spare at least 8 hours (or the whole day) to complete the round trip hike. The reward awaits at the end: being at the highest peak of Texas (8,751 feet or 2,667 meters)!
Start at the Pine Springs Visitor Center. Then there are signs that will lead you to the Guadalupe Peak Trail. The hardest part of the climb is in the first hour when slopes are steep. Take your time. The scenic views around you gets better every step of the way. Midway to the top, the terrain gets easier to hurdle. Enjoy the small forest of pinion pine you will see along the trail.
The last hurdle comes as you get closer to the summit. Push yourself. Once you reach the peak, you will be left in awe upon seeing the ridiculously beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and desert of Texas.
At the top, savor your accomplishment.
When you are ready to go down, follow the same trail.
Important notes.
– During summer days, the desert temperature can become so intense. Make sure you bring with you plenty of bottle water. The park advises to bring 1 gallon per person.
– This is a rough hiking on a steep slope. Wear appropriate shoes and clothes.
– Protect yourself from the scorching sun and wear sunscreen.
– Don’t climb if the weather forecast says that a storm is coming.
