You see huge sculptures erected inside a gated private property and all you could do is wish that you could come nearer and inspect them up close. The Starr Kempf Sculpture Garden is located in Colorado Springs, in a residential area that is quite hard to find without a GPS. With the winding and hilly terrain that lead to the garden, the location is very easy to miss. However, when you find it, you will be in awe of the creator Mr. Kempf, his talent, and his creativity.
They are kinetic wind sculptures.
Varying in sizes.
According to the website, Starr Kempf was a trouble sculptor.
He committed suicide in 1995. But his over-size works remain.
Some neighbors protested.
Few did not like the idea of putting up the structures in the area, so the city removed three of Kempf’s work. After Kempf’s daughter protested the action, most of pieces were kept in place.
As I said in the beginning, the only disappointment is that the Sculpture Garden is enclosed in the front yard of a residence and inaccessible to the public. The only way to view the creations is from the road. And if you happen to arrive at a time when other curious onlookers are there, then parking along the narrow road could be an issue.
Is Starr Kempf Sculpture Garden worth the drive? If you are heading to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo or even to the Garden of the Gods, then the garden is worth the stop.
