I miss my hometown, Argao, each time I see photos of its old town church. The Argao Church (also called as St. Michael the Archangel) is one of the southern Cebu’s attractions because of its rich Spanish colonial history.
Located 41 miles from Cebu City, Philippines, the St. Michael Church boasts a baroque architecture that is clearly visible inside and in the facade of this more-than-220-year-old structure (construction was completed in 1788). Over the years, especially when it was renovated for its bicentennial celebration in 1988, modernization treatments changed some of its historic elements. However, the church still exudes dramatic effects; you get this feeling of rustic ambiance the moment you step inside.
There are only 14 Spanish era pipe organs remaining in the country. Of the three in Cebu, one is in Argao.
Look at the intricate altar designs.
And see how sculpture and architecture coalesce into eye-catching patterns.
The ceiling has murals that portray manifestations of angels as well as the victory of St. Michael over Lucifer.
If you will be visiting the Argao Church, it is easy to find it. Once you reach Argao, ask any locals about the church and you will be properly directed. Also, most tricycles that ply the town can bring you there.
