Chicago is one big city with expensive hotel rates. The cheapest hotel accommodation you can get in the downtown area are hostel types — the ones with rooms that you shared with strangers and rooms shared a common bathroom. A two-star hotel in downtown Chicago can be pricey, no less than $100 a night. If you are only stopping in the windy city for a day, spending $100 may not be the best option.
Why not try getting a hotel 5 miles away from downtown?
At first I was hesitant to book a hotel that is far from places I want to visit in the city center. One reason is the possibility that I will be stuck in a heavy traffic while driving in Chicago. After a careful thought, I booked at the Super 8 Chicago Rosemont River Grove hotel. It was less than 10 miles from the city center and close to the interstate. The room rate was $60 a night.
I have booked at many Super 8 hotels before in my other travels, but this one in Chicago is quite different. The room was chic looking. The bed sheet design was not the usual old-style, flowery-colored. Everything in the room was color coordinated — from window curtains to floor carpet to even the frame of the big mirror above the head of the bed.
The bathroom was clean. Water pressure was good. Hot and cold water worked just fine.

While the desk staff immediately accommodated me during check-in, it still took me about 10 minutes to get to my room. It looked like their computer was acted weird that time and could not find my booking.
The free continental breakfast was average — yogurt, toasted bread and some cereals, apples, and the usual orange juice and coffee.
Wifi was fast. I never had a problem watching Netflix on my iPad.
And the flow of traffic going to the center? It was not bad at all. Maybe because I didn’t drive on early morning and early afternoon peak hours. It took me less than 30 minutes to reach the city center from the hotel.
