I have already written a long piece about American Jimmy Sieczka who posted a video called “20 Reasons Why I Dislike the Philippines”; the 14-minute video has been circulating in social networking sites. The content of the video, fully shot in Cebu, revolved around Jimmy being annoyed (to the point of him swearing profanely) at what he thought are Filipinos’ defective way of life — unsanitary food on streets, Filipinos using whitening creams, heavy traffic and pollution, untrained security guards, abundance of non-English-speaking Koreans, napkins cut into small sizes, and many more. Jimmy claimed that he has been living and working in Cebu City in the last three and half years.

On Monday, March 19th, the City of Cebu has reacted to the buzz. Sun-Star’s article “Video ‘embarrasses Cebu, country’” said that City Councilor Sisinio Andales wanted Jimmy Sieczka declared “persona non grata” in the city. He will file a resolution before the City Council next week.
“Iyang gipakatap sa tanan nga way ayo diri, nga it’s not fun to be in the Philippines”. Andales said this is in contrast to the tourism promotion slogan of the Department of Tourism “It’s More Fun in the Philippines.”
Also, according to The Manila Times, Mayor Michael Rama of Cebu City condemned the video content. However, Rama has a different way of looking at it:
“Maging eye-opener na lang siguro. Kaysa magalit, panatilihin na lang ang kalinisan at kaayusan sa Lungsod kasi in some point, tama rin naman sya [Perhaps it should serve as an eye-opener. Instead of being angry, just maintain cleanliness and order, to a certain extent, he has valid points]”
Jimmy Sieczka already explained that his goal in posting the video was to spark changes in the country in an unconventional way.
“…For those that actually get the piece and realize I’m just stating the obvious in an unconventional way in order to spark change, thank and salamat! With this many people watching, it proofs that there needs to be some more positive changes to the Filipino communities. Never once did I use the word hate in the piece. I simply pointed out issues that have been overlooked for quite some time.”
Here are more comments from Sunstar’s “Take ‘hate video’ constructively: tourism players.”
“I really don’t know the real intention of this exercise, but whether we like it or not, it may affect to certain degree our efforts to promote our city and our country. We cannot control how foreigners express their observation and experiences during their visit. Let’s simply take it positively, move on and do corrective measures altogether. The video is a good wake-up call that we still have many areas of concern to improve” — Newly-elected Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) president Prudenco Gesta
“While a couple of things were true and painful to accept, many of them were superficial and ignorant. With the advent of the Internet we have to be ready for attacks and unfavorable publicity like this.” — Tourism stakeholder Jay Aldeguer
“I think it (the video) is a combination of being hilarious, offensive, true, exaggerated, nit-picking, etc. I prefer to laugh about it and take it constructively.” — Cebu Business Club president Dondi Joseph
Which side are you? Do you agree with Jimmy? Do you want the City of Cebu to declare him as “Persona Non Grata”? Or should we just take this video as another social satire that we watch one day and forget the next day?

Update: Jimmy Sieczka issued an apology for making the video.
The video is meant to be constructively making us aware of the things we FILIPINOS neglect, but it doesn’t give Mr. Jimmy the right to curse in the video as if pertaining how much he HATES the Philippines. Indeed, he did not say that he “HATES” the Philippines but the cursing tells more of what he has in his mind and what he felt in enumerating the things he dislikes. A little analogy, if your sibling wants you to realize something that he wants you to change, will you tell him “Hoy! PI mo, umayos ka ngang Gago ka sa mga katarantaduhan mga pinag-gagawa mo sa wlang kwenta mong buhay. Hayop kang wlang pinagkatandaan!” (pardon the profanity)is that even PROPER? Another thing, if you are even concerned in making changes, there are proper channels to send them to to get at least a proper action. You can get your message and feelings across without profanity.
I am 100% Filipino and I love my country, I take the video as a wake up call. I just don like being berated with foul languages to make me change my not so good ways.
THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK Mr. Jimmy Sieczka!
whos next??
chiness
american chiness
korean
spanish
hey!!
let’s just see this vi in this way:
AN INTELLIGENT PERSON will take it as a CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM…
and the not-so ONES will take it as a HARD-
BLOW on the FACE!
no offense meant..I’m a Filipino, 100%…
and I LOVE THE PHILIPPINES so much.
The way this guy attacked and described “the Philippines” per his observatons in CEBU was really and kind-of exaggerated but let’s not be so thin-skinned about it. We can’t deny the facts that he mentioned. On thevid we can clearly see that what he’s saying is true! Dirty surroundings!
I’m from Manila and I love CEBU so much.
I have nothing against this guy, I jut hoped he did not use the entire country—the “Philippines” on his vid fo what he had seen or is still seeing is just a part of the whole country.
I am also lucky that he never chose to take the video shots here in Manila, WHAT MORE HILARIOUS THINGS COULD HE HAVE BEEN SAID about the Phils.if he did, right?
Let’s take it as a challenge!:P
we Filipinos are reallyclean and organized when it come to our personal appearances and hygienes. I jst hope that we apply the same with our surroundings!
WE CAN’T BLAME THIS ASSHOLE for putting things in this way, because he’s not blind, right?? He just menioned wha he sees, descrie as he sees it in his perspectives…
but instead of condemning this foreigner, LET’S TAKE IT AS A CHALLENGE!
let’s keep it a habit of making our surroundings a claner and greener one…
to my kababayans in CEBU, and sa KAPWA KO PILIPINO:
hindi naman po siguro magpopost ang kano na yan ng ganyang video kung malinis talaga hindi po ba? Naglarawan lang po sya ng nakita nya. Buti pa nga sya napansin nya ang dumi ng paligid natin…eh tayo nga deadma lang tayo a ganitong klase ng pligid.. dahil po b sanay na tayo??
let’s not take this vid as an attack to our country or to Cebu.
Let’s take it as a betterment plan from a foreigner to attract more tourists!
pagandahin pa natin ang Pilipinas, mga kababayan.
para the next time arounf, mabusog tong kano na to para kainin nya ang sinabi nya..:D
mg kapatid, kababayan…
let’s at together.
stay positive!!!
take this vid as a reality’s joke!
may katotohanan din po naman sa mga nabanggit nya..
nasobrahan lang sa pagka-OA …
but again, he’s free to exprss himself.
let’s jst prove na life in AMerica is NO BETTER than the Phils.
causeit’s really MORE FUN HERE!
I am Pinoy! PROUD TO BE ONE!

**this is just a call for a change!***
Eric, I don’t need to watch that video. Seriously, I know I am petty, but I might go overboard in reacting the video. Also, I am not like any other Filipinos out there throwing up their usual Filipino pride.
While I can agree to some of his statements, but he should realize the negative side of his own country. I understand he has enough freedom to speak out, I think he went overboard and he did not think what he is talking about. Typical ignorant American. No wonder, if Filipinos are getting into trouble, then so as Americans, and while I don’t wanna generalize them, most americans do is just to throw shit they have, kasi ang feeling nila, superior sila, kayang-kaya nilang gawin ang dapat nilang gawin. Also, if Filipino society is morally questionable, then so is American society. Divorce (seriously, it has lots of cons, especially when doing it with lacking purpose). Increasing problems of the youth. Prostitot culture. Lots of it. Lots. Kaya hindi nagtitino mga kabataan diyan sa States kasi masyado nilang naaabuso ang 911 bullshit. Totoo naman eh. I don’t need to explain further. Alam mo na ang cons ng masyadong 911.
As for the negative comments about Koreans, I hope Korean netizens would read this so that Korean netizens can petition for him to jump off the cliff without a parachute. Hahahah! Joke. Sorry to Korean BTW, and while I hate Koreans on some aspects—their rude and superior behavior—I believe in their netizen power. Hell! They could even send Justin Bieber to North Korea… ahahhaha! another joke!
Not only his comments are obnoxious, it borders xenophobia as well. Could not speak English? Fuck, he is residing in the Philipines, so he should learn to speak Tagalog or Cebuano. He has no right to shove that fucking American culture down to every Filipinos’ (and Koreans’) throats.
For the purposes of determining if anything should be done to Jimmy, it’s irrelevant if what he said is true or not. The fact is, The Philippines is a democracy and safeguards free speech. That right should not only apply to Filipino citizens. It should apply to everyone who comes here. Politicians saying they want to make him persona non grata for this video come across as immature and childish.
This quote sums up the video best:
“I think it (the video) is a combination of being hilarious, offensive, true, exaggerated, nit-picking, etc. I prefer to laugh about it and take it constructively.” — Cebu Business Club president Dondi Joseph
That is an intelligent response.
Filipinos need to realize that what Jimmy did, we (Americans) do to ourselves constantly. It’s a huge part of our culture to criticize, not only others, but ourselves. Back in the US, if you watch TV, read a magazine or listen to the radio, you are hit with negative things about the USA constantly. We criticize our politicians, our culture, our government, etc constantly.
Some people do it with rage, some with mock indignation, some with comedy, etc. But the point of all of it is to make people more aware of these things so something can be done to improve them.
No one likes to hear negative things about themselves (or their country), and it’s particularly painful to hear such things from someone who is an outsider. But a person, group, or country cannot fix things that are problems until they are willing to face them.
I’m not saying that everything Jimmy said was accurate, but isn’t it possible that at least some of it is??
I wish there was more conversation about the problems of The Philippines among Filipinos. Such dialog is the only way to make things better. The Philippines has a lot of great things about it, but like everywhere else in the world, it has it’s share of problems too.
Admitting to faults is not a weakness nor is it anti-nationalistic…it’s the first step to making The Philippines a better place.
Naaah…let him stay in Cebu and suffer through the shit hole he is in. He is plain and simple obnoxious, self-promoting prick. Congratulations to Mayor Rama for taking it in stride, and pox to the councilor for wanting to declare him persona non grata.
There are two sides of a coin. constructive or destructive. Just like there are good things and bad things in USA/Canada. Will the Americans/Canadians take the same type of criticism as a positive comment? Probably not. If no one will stand against them, we will end up being ridiculed by these visitors. Kudos to Atty. Andales.
He likes the Philippines. It already took him 3 long years to stay. He simply wanted to raise an awareness in such a way that those issues are addressed.
If so, then there would be more reasons to have more Jimmy’s spending their holidays in the Philippines.
Sobrang nakakahiya ang reaksyon ng mga pilipino sa video. putangina. we cannot accept negative feedback! its ridiculous! that’s why our country is in the shitter! lets get our heads out of our asses and swallow our BS “pinoy pride”. Kapag naayos na natin ang bansang to, doon lang ako magiging proud to be pinoy!
I’m a Filipino, not a Cebuano, and I do not find the video offensive. Maybe it’s because I’m a straightforward person and the video is nothing less than that. People should quit being to sensitive.
I bet you any money that the reason for Jimmy’s apology is because he got a call from the Bureau of Immigration and was told to not only take the video of Youtube but also make a public apology or get kicked out of the Philippines and put on the BI’s blacklist.
TRY NAMAN NATIN IBA! LETS PUT ON A MICROSCOPE ANG ISANG PILIPINONG BAKLA NA NAGATAGUMAPY AT KINILALA NG FASHION WORLD SA BUONG MUNDO SA ANGKING GALING SA PAGBLOBLOG.MEET BRYANBOY AND THIS IS WHAT HES GOT TO SAY ABOUT FILIPINOS CHECK OUT [link deleted] now tell me??? sick person or sensible? i don’t know which side I’m in.
Oh, I salute the Cebu City Mayor for being open-minded about this issue. Clearly, Jimmy is one foreigner who just spoke what’s in his mind. I do not think he deserves a “persona non grata” because he spoke the truth and there were footages shown in the video be it staged or not.
The City Councilor on the other hand, should start addressing the problems and ills of Cebu rather than dip his finger in this situation. On second thoughts, he was probably hurt because he is a member of almost all the city government committees mentioned in the video. Hehe! :-)
“Do you want the City of Cebu to declare him as “Persona Non Grata”? Or should we just take this video as another social satire that we watch one day and forget the next day?”
None of the two. We always hear wake up call. Let’s just see what happens one month from now, if there will ever be change. But one thing’s for sure, Sisinio Andales is screwed
even if i’m a filipino, no hurt feelings on that video coz we did not prioritize environmental concerns. moreover our government official in cebu is not doing their job cox they are more busy on politics (how to win next election)…. no to the councilor’s resolution.
